Resumen Objetivo: Describir los factores que pueden determinar la reducción de los síntomas en el trastorno de ansiedad generalizada y trastorno por estrés postraumático, mediante estimulación magnética transcraneal en combinación con terapia de extinción. Material y Métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda en bases de datos (Cochrane, EBSCO, Pubmed, Sciencedirect y Wiley), con las palabras clave "transcranial magnetic stimulation", "human", "fear extinction". Los criterios de selección incluyen estudios en humanos, tratamientos con terapia de extinción y EMT, en donde se registre la conductancia de la piel como variable de respuesta. Resultados: Existe poca investigación que cumpla con los criterios de la presente revisión bibliográfica. Se obtuvieron 5 artículos enfocados en el tratamiento de síntomas como el miedo y la recurrencia de recuerdos traumáticos. Los protocolos de estimulación son heterogéneos, la frecuencia de estimulación va de 1 Hz a 30 Hz. La estimulación de alta frecuencia fue la más utilizada. La duración máxima de los efectos reportados fue de 1 mes. Conclusiones: La EMT junto con la terapia de extinción como tratamiento para TEPT y TAG es un campo de estudio que requiere de más investigación. Los resultados sobre su eficacia no son concluyentes, el tamaño de muestra es pequeño y es necesario identificar qué protocolos son eficaces a largo plazo. Los estudios clínicos con pacientes que presenten estos trastornos son relevantes para conocer los efectos de aquellos protocolos que han sido exitosos en pacientes sanos (condicionados al miedo).


Abstract Objective: To describe the factors that can determine the reduction of symptoms in generalized anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorders by transcranial magnetic stimulation in combination with extinction therapy. Material and methods: A bibliographic review was conducted in databases (Cochrane, EBSCO, PubMed, ScienceDirect y Wiley), using the keywords: "transcranial magnetic stimulation", "human" and "fear extinction". A selection of clinical trials that used extinction therapy plus TMS and the skin conductance as variable quantified was made. Results: Five articles focused on the treatment of symptoms, like fear and recurrence of traumatic memories were obtained. There is little research on the topic. Stimulation protocols are heterogeneous between studies (stimulation frequency ranges from 1 to 30 Hz). Most of the studies reviewed reported the use of high-frequency stimulation. The maximum duration of therapeutic effects reported was one month. Conclusions: TMS and extinction therapy as a treatment for PTSD and GAD has a growing research field. Effectiveness results are not conclusive, sample sizes are small, and studies do not focus on which protocols are effective in the long-term. New studies that include patients with diagnosed PTSD and GAD are relevant to assess the protocols that have already been successful in healthy patients (fear-conditioned).

Resumen (analítico) Presentamos una iniciativa y proponemos una metodología transdisciplinaria para cultivar la memoria biocultural, basada en los procesos de participación y materialización en comunidades de práctica (educativas). Presentamos el proyecto «Escuchando a los abuelos¼, que buscó facilitar diálogos intergeneracionales en tres escuelas mapuche (~ 90 niños y niñas) en Wallmapu, Chile. «Escuchando a los abuelos¼ utilizó a las aves como protagonistas de narrativas locales sobre el territorio. Cocreamos un ciclo de cinco pasos para promover la participación y la materialización. Los niños y niñas desarrollaron un ejercicio de abstracción para dar significado a las narrativas que ellos mismos recopilaron para crear memes positivos sobre las aves. Estos memes fueron comunicados dentro y más allá de sus comunidades. Concluimos que la experiencia de los abuelos debe ser honrada para contrarrestar la actual extinción de la experiencia biocultural.


Abstract (analytical) This article presents an initiative and proposes a transdisciplinary methodology to cultivate biocultural memory based on the processes of participation and materialization in (educational) communities-of-practice. We implemented the project "Listening to elders" that sought to facilitate intergenerational dialogues in three mapuche schools (with approximately 90 children) in Wallmapu, Chile. Listening to elders used birds as the basis of constructing local narratives about the territory. We co-created a 5-Step cycle to promote participation and materialization. The children participated in an abstraction exercise to give meaning to the narratives they constructed themselves to create positive memes involving birds. These memes were communicated within and beyond their communities. The authors conclude that the experiences of elders must be honored in communities to counter the current dynamic involving the extinction of biocultural experience.


Resumo (analítico) Apresentamos uma iniciativa e propomos uma metodologia transdisciplinar para o cultivo da memória biocultural, baseada nos processos de participação e materialização, em comunidades de prática (educacionais). Apresentamos o projeto «Escutando os avós¼ que buscou facilitar o diálogo intergeracional em três escolas mapuche (~ 90 crianças) em Wallmapu, Chile. «Ouvir os avós¼ usou os pássaros como base para as narrativas locais sobre o território. Co-criamos um ciclo de cinco passos para promover a participação e materialização. As crianças desenvolveram um exercício de abstração para dar sentido às narrativas que elas próprias coletaram para criar memes positivos sobre pássaros. Esses memes foram comunicados dentro e fora de suas comunidades. Concluímos que a experiência dos avós deve ser honrada para conter a atual extinção da experiência biocultural.

ABSTRACT

Fear memories are temporarily suppressed after repeated retrieval, a phenomenon known as memory extinction.How to reduce or even eliminate fear memory is the key to the treatment of fear related diseases such as post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD). A single extinction training based on Pavlov's fear regulation task could only inhibit the expression of conditioned fear memory traces, but it could not eliminate the acquired conditioned fear memory. However, according to the reconsolidation theory based on memory, the retrieval-extinction paradigm has a more lasting effect on the erasure and rewriting of fear memory, and can effectively prevent the return of fear memory. Studies have shown that extraction-regression is closely related to a variety of neurotransmitter receptors such as glutamate receptor(GluR), dopamine receptor(DAR), L-type voltage-gated calcium channels(LVGCs) and cannabinoid. Moreover, its effect is closely related with factors such as retrieval-extinction memory stage. At present, most of the researches on extracted boundary conditions only stay at the level of behavior, with little understanding and exploration on the level of molecular mechanism. From the perspective of molecular neurobiology, with different stages of memory and different types of receptors and molecular mechanisms, this research reviewed the mechanisms of retrieval-extinction in recent years.It provided valuable signaling pathways, molecular targets and research directions for the treatment of fear-related diseases such as PTSD.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Mammals are charismatic organisms that play a fundamental role in ecological functions and ecosystem services, such as pollination, seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, and pest control. The state of São Paulo represents only 3% of the Brazilian territory but holds 33% of its mammalian diversity. Most of its territory is dominated by agriculture, pastures, and urban areas which directly affect the diversity and persistence of mammals in the landscape. In addition, São Paulo has the largest port in Latin America and the largest offshore oil reservoir in Brazil, with a 600 km stretch of coastline with several marine mammal species. These human-made infrastructures affect the diversity, distribution, ecology, and the future of mammals in the state. Here, we answer five main questions: 1) What is the diversity of wild mammals in São Paulo state? 2) Where are they? 3) What is their positive and negative impact on human well-being? 4) How do mammals thrive in human-modified landscapes? 5) What is the future of mammals in the state? The state of São Paulo holds 255 species of native mammals, with four endemic species, two of them globally endangered. At least six species (two marsupials, Giant otter, Pampas deer, Brazilian dwarf brocket deer, and Giant armadillo) were extirpated from the state due to hunting and habitat loss. The intense human land use in the state forced many mammalian species to change their diet to cope with the intense fragmentation and agriculture. Large-scale monoculture has facilitated the invasion of exotic species such as wild boars (javali) and the European hare. Several "savanna-dwelling" species are expanding their ranges (Maned wolf, Brocket deer) over deforested areas and probably reflect changes towards a drier climate. Because the state has the largest road system, about 40,000 mammals from 33 species are killed per year in collisions causing an economic loss of 12 million dollars/year. The diversity of mammals is concentrated in the largest forest remnants of Serra do Mar and in the interior of the State, mainly in the regions of Ribeirão Preto and Jundiaí. Sampling gaps are concentrated throughout the interior of the state, particularly in the northwest region. Wild mammals play a fundamental role in many ecosystem services, but they can also be a concern in bringing new emergent diseases to humans. Although the taxonomy of mammals seems to be well known, we show that new species are continuously being discovered in the state. Therefore, continuous surveys using traditional and new technologies (eDNA, iDNA, drones), long-term population monitoring, investigation of the interface of human-wildlife conflict, and understanding of the unique ecosystem role played by mammals are future avenues for promoting sustainable green landscapes allied to human well-being in the state. The planting of forest or savanna corridors, particularly along with major river systems, in the plateau, controlling illegal hunting in the coastal areas, managing fire regimes in the Cerrado, and mitigating roadkill must be prioritized to protect this outstanding mammal diversity.


Resumo Os mamíferos são organismos carismáticos que desempenham um papel fundamental na função ecológica e nos serviços ecossistêmicos, como polinização, dispersão de sementes, ciclagem de nutrientes e controle de pragas. O Estado de São Paulo representa apenas 3% do território brasileiro, mas detém 33% da diversidade de mamíferos. A maior parte de seu território é dominado pela agricultura, pastagens e áreas urbanas que afetam diretamente a diversidade e a persistência dos mamíferos na paisagem. Além disso, São Paulo possui o maior porto da América Latina e o maior reservatório de petróleo costeiro do Brasil, com 600 km de extensão de litoral com diversas espécies de mamíferos marinhos. Essas infraestruturas afetam a diversidade, distribuição, ecologia e o futuro dos mamíferos no estado. Aqui, respondemos cinco perguntas principais: 1) Qual é a diversidade de mamíferos silvestres no Estado de São Paulo? 2) Onde eles ocorrem? 3) Qual é o seu impacto positivo e negativo no bem-estar humano? 4) Como os mamíferos persistem em paisagens modificadas pelo homem? 5) Qual é o futuro dos mamíferos no estado? O estado de São Paulo possui 255 espécies de mamíferos nativos, com quatro espécies endêmicas, duas delas globalmente ameaçadas de extinção. Pelo menos seis espécies (dois marsupiais, ariranha, veado-campeiro, veado-cambuta e tatu-canastra) foram extirpadas do estado devido à caça e perda de habitat. O intenso uso humano da terra no estado forçou muitas espécies de mamíferos a mudar sua dieta para lidar com a intensa fragmentação e agricultura. A monocultura em larga escala facilitou a invasão de espécies exóticas, como porcos selvagens (javaporco) e a lebre europeia. Várias espécies de áreas abertas estão expandindo suas áreas de distribuição (lobo-guará, veado-catingueiro) sobre áreas desmatadas e provavelmente refletem mudanças em direção a um clima mais seco. Como o estado possui o maior sistema rodoviário do Brasil, cerca de 40 mil mamíferos de 33 espécies são mortos por ano em colisões, causando um prejuízo econômico de 12 milhões de dólares/ano. A diversidade de mamíferos está concentrada nos maiores remanescentes florestais da Serra do Mar e no interior do Estado, principalmente nas regiões de Ribeirão Preto e Jundiaí. As lacunas amostrais estão concentradas em todo o interior do estado, principalmente na região noroeste. Os mamíferos silvestres desempenham um papel fundamental em muitos serviços ecossistêmicos, mas também podem ser uma preocupação em trazer novas doenças emergentes para as populações humanas. Embora a taxonomia de mamíferos pareça ser bem conhecida, mostramos que novas espécies estão sendo continuamente descobertas no estado. Portanto, pesquisas usando tecnologias tradicionais e novas (eDNA, iDNA, drones), monitoramento populacional de longo prazo, a investigação da interface do conflito homem-vida selvagem e a compreensão do papel único no ecossistema desempenhado pelos mamíferos são um caminho futuro para promover uma paisagem verde sustentável aliada ao bem-estar humano no estado. O plantio de corredores florestais ou de cerrado, principalmente junto aos principais sistemas fluviais, no planalto, o controle da caça ilegal nas áreas costeiras, o manejo dos regimes de fogo no Cerrado e a mitigação dos atropelamentos devem ser uma prioridade para proteger essa notável diversidade de mamíferos.

Resumen Para tomar decisiones en conservación o manejo de especies silvestres es prioritario conocer su estado de conservación, siendo el método de la IUCN el más utilizado para categorizar especies según su nivel de amenaza, tanto a nivel global como a nivel nacional. En este artículo realizamos un análisis de las especies de plantas y vertebrados amenazadas y de aquellas con datos insuficientes del departamento de Loreto, el más grande y uno de los más biodiversos del Perú, con el fin de identificar las principales amenazas que soportan, identificar los vacíos de información y comparar la congruencia entre la lista nacional y la global. Uniendo ambas listas, en Loreto se ha registrado 226 especies consideradas amenazadas. Existen grandes diferencias entre la lista nacional y la global, principalmente para plantas y peces. La principal amenaza registrada es la pérdida de hábitat, que afecta a la mayor parte de las especies de vertebrados terrestres amenazados. Existen grandes vacíos de información sobre tamaño y tendencia poblacional en todos los grupos taxonómicos, y de distribución en las plantas amenazadas. Entre las especies con datos insuficientes, los vacíos principales se dan en los aspectos de distribución y población, pero también en amenazas, ecología y taxonomía. Nuestros resultados resaltan la necesidad de actualizar la lista de plantas amenazadas del Perú, así como crear una lista de peces amenazados y realizar investigación sobre distribución, población, amenazas y taxonomía de las especies con datos insuficientes y de las especies amenazadas con vacíos de información.


Abstract In order to make decisions on the conservation or management of wild species, it is a priority to know their conservation status. For this purpose, the most widely used method is IUCN's categorization of species according to the level of threat they face, both globally and nationally. In this article we conducted an analysis of threatened plant and vertebrate species, and of data deficient species in the department of Loreto, the largest and one of the most biodiverse in Peru, to identify the main threats they face, identify information gaps, and compare the national and global lists. According to both lists combined, 226 species considered threatened have been recorded in Loreto. Large differences exist between the national and global lists, mainly for plants and fish. The main threat recorded is habitat loss, which affects most of the threatened terrestrial vertebrate species. Large gaps persist in information on population size and trends for all taxonomic groups, and on distribution for threatened plants. Among the data deficient species, the main gaps are in distribution and population aspects, but also in threats, ecology, and taxonomy. Our results highlight the need to update the list of threatened plants of Peru, as well as to create a list of threatened fish species and to conduct research on the distribution, population, threats, and taxonomy of species with deficient data and threatened species with information gaps.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The Caribbean monk seal (Monachus tropicalis), the only seal species native to Central America, was declared extinct in 2008, with the last confirmed sighting in 1952. This species historically had a broad range throughout the gulf of Mexico. This article discusses the history of Western science on the monk seal, from its first recorded sighting by a Western colonizer in 1492 to scientific collection in the 1800s and 1900s, as a history of the erasure of this species. Museum practices of collecting and displaying Caribbean monk seals have directly contributed to this erasure, and ways of writing a new history by giving the Caribbean monk seal the capacity to refuse erasure are suggested.


Resumo A foca-monge-do-caribe (Monachus tropicalis), a única espécie de focas nativa da América Central, foi declarada extinta em 2008, tendo o último registro de avistamento confirmado em 1952. Historicamente, essa espécie ocupou vastas áreas do golfo do México. Este artigo discute a história da ciência ocidental sobre a foca-monge, desde o primeiro registro de seu avistamento por um colonizador ocidental, em 1492, até a coleção científica nos anos 1800 e 1900, como uma história de desaparecimento da espécie. As práticas museológicas de coleta e exposição de focas-monge-do-caribe contribuíram diretamente para tal desaparecimento, e aqui são sugeridas maneiras de escrever uma nova história concedendo à foca-monge-do-caribe a possibilidade de recusa ao desaparecimento.

Resumen Introducción y objetivo: Los procesos de aprendizaje y motivación han sido centrales para la comprensión de los mecanismos que subyacen al tabaquismo. En particular, existe evidencia creciente sobre la importancia de valores motivacionales de incentivo para entender el inicio y mantenimiento del tabaquismo. El objetivo general de este experimento fue evaluar el papel de la nicotina aguda sobre el valor de incentivo de una recompensa natural, (comida) asociada con un estímulo ambiental, (palanca experimental). Método: Se utilizaron ratas Wistar. Se administró nicotina (0.4 mg/kg) de manera aguda en momentos específicos del entrenamiento, utilizando un procedimiento de diez sesiones de adquisición y cuatro sesiones extinción en una tarea pavloviana de automoldeamiento. El diseño experimental incluyó tres grupos, el grupo control de solución salina y grupos de nicotina durante la adquisición y la extinción. Resultados: Se encontró que la administración aguda de nicotina, de manera específica y en comparación con los otros dos grupos experimentales, resultó en un efecto de retardo durante la fase de extinción, y que una administración similar de nicotina no resultó en efectos observables durante el desempeño comportamental en adquisición. Conclusiones: Estos resultados apoyan el papel de la nicotina como fortalecedora del valor de incentivo de las claves ambientales durante la extinción para una tarea de automoldeamiento.


Abstract Introduction and goal: Learning and motivational processes have been central for a modern understanding of tobacco addiction. There is evidence that supports the importance of incentive motivational processes for the maintenance of tobacco addiction. The main goal of the present experiment was to evaluate the effects of acute nicotine on the incentive value of a natural reward, (food) paired with an environmental cue (pressing lever). Method: Wistar rats were used. Accute nicotine (0.4 mg/kg) was administered on key sessions, using a pavlovian autoshaping procedure involving ten acquisition and four extinction sessions. The experimental design included three groups, a saline administration control group and groups with specific nicotine administration during either acquisition or extinction. Results: We found that acute administration of nicotine, in contrast with saline only or previous nicotine administration during acquisition, had an enhancing effect on responding for the environmental cue during autoshaping extinction, but we did not find evidence that acute nicotine affected acquisition performance. Conclusion: Our results are consistent with a role of nicotine enhancing the incentive value of stimuli during extinction from a pavlovian autoshaping task.

ABSTRACT

The paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT), which serves as a hub, receives dense projections from the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and projects to the lateral division of central amygdala (CeL). The infralimbic (IL) cortex plays a crucial role in encoding and recalling fear extinction memory. Here, we found that neurons in the PVT and IL were strongly activated during fear extinction retrieval. Silencing PVT neurons inhibited extinction retrieval at recent time point (24 h after extinction), while activating them promoted extinction retrieval at remote time point (7 d after extinction), suggesting a critical role of the PVT in extinction retrieval. In the mPFC-PVT circuit, projections from IL rather than prelimbic cortex to the PVT were dominant, and disrupting the IL-PVT projection suppressed extinction retrieval. Moreover, the axons of PVT neurons preferentially projected to the CeL. Silencing the PVT-CeL circuit also suppressed extinction retrieval. Together, our findings reveal a new neural circuit for fear extinction retrieval outside the classical IL-amygdala circuit.

ABSTRACT

Drug-associated reward memories are conducive to intense craving and often trigger relapse. Simvastatin has been shown to regulate lipids that are involved in memory formation but its influence on other cognitive processes is elusive. Here, we used a mass spectrometry-based lipidomic method to evaluate the impact of simvastatin on the mouse brain in a cocaine-induced reinstatement paradigm. We found that simvastatin blocked the reinstatement of cocaine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) without affecting CPP acquisition. Specifically, only simvastatin administered during extinction prevented cocaine-primed reinstatement. Global lipidome analysis showed that the nucleus accumbens was the region with the greatest degree of change caused by simvastatin. The metabolism of fatty-acids, phospholipids, and triacylglycerol was profoundly affected. Simvastatin reversed most of the effects on phospholipids induced by cocaine. The correlation matrix showed that cocaine and simvastatin significantly reshaped the lipid metabolic pathways in specific brain regions. Furthermore, simvastatin almost reversed all changes in the fatty acyl profile and unsaturation caused by cocaine. In summary, pre-extinction treatment with simvastatin facilitates cocaine extinction and prevents cocaine relapse with brain lipidome remodeling.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Knowledge of the ichthyofauna of a hydrographic basin is the minimum necessary condition for the implementation of any measures for the exploration, management or preservation of water and fishing resources. Despite its relevance, the number of fish species across the Iguassu River basin is still uncertain. Thus, the objective of this study was to compile the fish species that occur in the extensive stretch of the basin above the Iguassu Falls. In addition, we recorded the level of threat of extinction for native species, the origin of nonnative species, and their main vectors of introduction. To achieve this goal, a survey was carried out through consultations with ichthyological collections as well as online databases. Also, a literature review was conducted using the search platforms Thomson Reuters, SciELO and Elsevier's ScienceDirect to locate all articles published by March 2020 that addressed the topic "ichthyofauna in the Iguassu River basin". The survey compiled a total of 133 fish species distributed in nine orders, 29 families and 72 genera. Seventy-nine fish species were recorded that occur throughout the entire length of the basin, 119 species that occur in the hydrographic units of the middle and lower Iguassu River (40 exclusive) and 93 species that occur in the hydrographic unit of the upper Iguassu River (14 exclusive). The endemism rate shown here for the Iguassu River basin (approximately 69%) contrasts with the 40 nonnative fish species recorded (approximately 30% of the total species in the basin). Successive impoundments, reductions in habitat quality and the increase in the number of nonnative species are the main threats to native species, especially to the endemic species; approximately 20% of these species were listed in some category of threat of extinction. We emphasize that constant monitoring of ichthyofauna is necessary to discover putatively undescribed species, as well as for the application of management strategies to mitigate the negative effects and promote the control of the spread of nonnative species.


Resumo: Conhecer a ictiofauna de uma bacia hidrográfica compreende condição mínima necessária para que se possam implantar quaisquer medidas de exploração, manejo ou preservação dos recursos hídricos e pesqueiros. Apesar de sua relevância, o número de espécies de peixes de toda a bacia hidrográfica do rio Iguaçu ainda é incerto. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi compilar as espécies de peixes que ocorrem no extenso trecho da bacia acima das Cataratas do Iguaçu. Além disso, registramos o nível de ameaça de extinção às espécies nativas, a origem das espécies não nativas e suas principais vias de introdução. Para isso foi realizado um levantamento por meio de consultas a coleções ictiológicas, bem como aos bancos de dados online, além de revisão de literatura por meio do uso das plataformas de buscas Thomson Reuters, Scielo e Elsevier - ScienceDirect, que abordavam o tópico "ictiofauna da bacia do rio Iguaçu" e o período de tempo incluiu todos os trabalhos publicados até março de 2020. O levantamento compilou ao todo 133 espécies, distribuídas em nove ordens, 29 famílias e 72 gêneros. Em toda a extensão da bacia foram registradas 79 espécies de peixes. Nas unidades hidrográficas do médio e baixo rio Iguaçu foram registradas 119 espécies (40 exclusivas) e na unidade hidrográfica do alto rio Iguaçu foram registradas 93 espécies (14 exclusivas). A taxa de endemismo para a bacia do rio Iguaçu (aproximadamente 69%) contrasta com as 40 espécies de peixes não nativos registradas (aproximadamente 30% do total de espécies na bacia). Os sucessivos barramentos, a perda de qualidade de habitats e o aumento no número de espécies não nativas são ameaças às espécies autóctones, especialmente às endêmicas, as quais apresentam aproximadamente 20% listadas em alguma categoria de ameaça ao risco de extinção. Ressaltamos que o monitoramento constante da ictiofauna é necessário para a descoberta de espécies supostamente não descritas, bem como para a aplicação de estratégias de manejo para mitigar os efeitos negativos e promover o controle da disseminação de espécies não nativas.

Abstract In this study, in vitro propagation and acclimatization of Helianthemum germanicopolitanum Bornm. plant, a local endemic in Çankırı Province (Turkey) with arid and semi-arid lands, and an endangered species taking part among medicinal and aromatic plants were accomplished, which is under-researched. In this study, three basal media [a) Murashige and Skoog b) Gamborg's B5, and c) Nitsch & Nitsch], two gelling agents (agar 7 g/L, and gelrite 2.1 g/L), eight cytokinins and eight auxin doses of plant growth regulators [a) 6-benzyladenin, b) Kinetin-(0, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/L), c) Indole-3-butyric acid, d) α-napthaleneacetic acid-(0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/L)] prepared in 64 different combinations with 30 g/L sucrose was added to the basal media and adjusted to pH 5.7 for in vitro propagation of H. germanicopolitanum. During in vitro propagation of the plant, external and internal infections were frequently encountered and this was solved by the developed protocol. The best shoot growth (1.141 cm) and shoot length (0.572 cm) were obtained in the Gamborg's B5 medium in combination with Kinetin (0.5 mg/L)+Indole-3-butyric acid (0.5 mg/L)+gelrite. The maximum number of shoots (19.50) and the best multiplication rate (94%) were obtained in the media containing benzyladenin (1 mg/L)+Indole-3-butyric acid (0.5 mg/L) plant growth regulator in Murashige and Skoog medium solidified with agar. At the rooting stage, the maximum number of roots (30) was reached in the Murashige and Skoog medium containing gelrite and the best rooting rate (92%) with agar. A hundred plants representing the best shoot and root growth were taken to acclimatization stage, and 32 of these plants adapted to external conditions.

Abstract: Climate change will likely be the most significant challenge faced by species in this century, and species' ability to cope with climate change depends on their life history and ecological and evolutionary traits. Understanding how these traits mediate species' responses is beneficial for identifying more vulnerable species or prone to extinction risk. Here, we carried out a literature review describing how four traits commonly used in vulnerability assessments (i.e. clutch size, diet breadth, dispersal ability, and climatic tolerance) may determine species vulnerability. We also portray the possible mechanisms that explain how these traits govern species responses to climate change. The literature suggests different mechanisms operating for the evaluated traits. The mechanism of response to climate change differs between species inhabiting tropical and temperate regions: while species from the temperate areas may respond positively to temperature rise, tropical species may be severely affected. Since ectotherms depend on environment temperature, they are more sensitive and present different response mechanisms from endotherms.


Resumo: A mudança climática provavelmente será o maior desafio enfrentado pelas espécies neste século e a capacidade das espécies em lidar com a mudança climática depende de seus próprios atributos de história de vida, ecológicos e evolutivos. Entender como esses atributos mediam as respostas das espécies é extremamente útil para identificar espécies que são mais vulneráveis ou sujeitas ao risco de extinção. Aqui, realizamos uma revisão da literatura com foco na descrição de como quatro atributos comumente usados em avaliações de vulnerabilidade (tamanho da ninhada, amplitude da dieta, capacidade de dispersão e tolerância climática) podem realmente determinar a vulnerabilidade das espécies. Também retratamos os possíveis mecanismos que explicam como esses atributos governam as respostas das espécies à mudança climática. A literatura sugere diferentes mecanismos operando para os atributos avaliados. O mecanismo de resposta à mudança climática difere entre as espécies que habitam as regiões tropicais e temperadas: enquanto as espécies das regiões temperadas podem responder positivamente ao aumento da temperatura, as espécies tropicais podem ser severamente afetadas. Como os ectotérmicos dependem da temperatura ambiente, eles são mais sensíveis e apresentam mecanismos de resposta diferentes dos endotérmicos.

ABSTRACT

Drug-associated reward memories are conducive to intense craving and often trigger relapse. Simvastatin has been shown to regulate lipids that are involved in memory formation but its influence on other cognitive processes is elusive. Here, we used a mass spectrometry-based lipidomic method to evaluate the impact of simvastatin on the mouse brain in a cocaine-induced reinstatement paradigm. We found that simvastatin blocked the reinstatement of cocaine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) without affecting CPP acquisition. Specifically, only simvastatin administered during extinction prevented cocaine-primed reinstatement. Global lipidome analysis showed that the nucleus accumbens was the region with the greatest degree of change caused by simvastatin. The metabolism of fatty-acids, phospholipids, and triacylglycerol was profoundly affected. Simvastatin reversed most of the effects on phospholipids induced by cocaine. The correlation matrix showed that cocaine and simvastatin significantly reshaped the lipid metabolic pathways in specific brain regions. Furthermore, simvastatin almost reversed all changes in the fatty acyl profile and unsaturation caused by cocaine. In summary, pre-extinction treatment with simvastatin facilitates cocaine extinction and prevents cocaine relapse with brain lipidome remodeling.

Abstract Introduction: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the BDNF, COMT, CBR1 and CCK genes have been associated with the process of fear extinction in humans. Since fear extinction plays a key role in recovering from psychological trauma, there is a possibility that these genes modulate the risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objective: To assess unilocus and multilocus associations between SNPs in the BDNF, COMT, CBR1 and CCK genes and the risk of developing PTSD. Materials and methods: 129 inhabitants of the municipality of Itagüí, Colombia, who had experienced psychological trauma at least once, were genotyped for these polymorphisms (38 cases of PTSD and 91 controls). Logistic regression was used to perform unilocus and multilocus association tests for single SNPs and existing SNP-SNP genotypic combinations. Results: No unilocus associations were found, but interactions between the BDNF and CBR1 genes and between the COMT and CCK genes were observed. Of these interactions, the genotypic combinations that behaved as risk factors were AG-AA (OR=13.52, p<0.05) in the BDNF-CBR1 interaction, and TC-AA (OR=13.70, p<0.05) in the CCK-COMT interaction. Conclusions: The two pairs of interacting polymorphisms found in this study could act additively and generate a greater risk of developing PTSD after suffering psychological trauma. People who have a single allele have a lower risk of developing PTSD than those who have two alleles in the interacting genes.


Resumen Introducción. Los polimorfismos de un solo nucleótido (SNP, por su sigla en inglés) en los genes BDNF, COMT, CBR1 y CCK han sido asociados con el proceso de extinción del miedo en humanos. Dado que la extinción del miedo es clave para la recuperación del trauma psicológico, es posible que estos genes modulen el riesgo de desarrollar trastorno de estrés postraumático (TEPT). Objetivo. Evaluar las asociaciones unilocus y multilocus entre los SNP en los genes BDNF, COMT, CBR1 y CCK y el riesgo de desarrollar TEPT. Materiales y métodos. 129 habitantes del municipio de Itagüí, Colombia, que habían experimentado trauma psicológico al menos una vez, fueron genotipificados para estos polimorfismos (38 casos de TEPT y 91 controles). Se realizaron pruebas de asociación unilocus y multilocus por regresión logística para SNP únicos y las combinaciones genotípicas SNP-SNP existentes. Resultados. No se encontraron asociaciones unilocus, pero se observaron interacciones entre BDNF y CBR1, y CCK y COMT. De estas interacciones, las combinaciones genotípicas que se comportaron como factores de riesgo fueron AG-AA (OR=13.52, p<0.05) de BDNF-CBR1 y TC-AA (OR=13.70, p<0.05) de CCK-COMT. Conclusiones: Los dos pares de polimorfismos en interacción encontrados en el presente estudio podrían actuar de forma aditiva y generar un mayor riesgo de desarrollar TEPT después de sufrir trauma psicológico. Quienes portan un solo alelo tienen un menor riesgo de desarrollar el trastorno que quienes portan dos alelos en genes que interactúan entre sí.

Introduction: Places with high species diversity have high linguistic diversity, whereas areas with low species diversity tend to have low linguistic diversity. Objective: To characterize the intriguing relationship between biological and cultural diversity, a correlation that has been discussed at a global scale, but here tested for the first time in Mexico. Methods: We compiled exhaustive databases on both endangered species and endangered languages, and reviewed available literature on Mexico's biocultural diversity with a focus on endangered and critically endangered species and languages. Results: With 364 living languages, Mexico is the world's fifth most linguistically diverse country, but 64 of these languages are facing a very high risk of disappearance and 13 have already disappeared. Mexico is also the fourth most biologically diverse country, but 1 213 species of its flora and fauna are threatened with extinction and at least 127 species were recently extinct. Conclusions: Indigenous peoples are custodians of much of the world's biocultural diversity. As the world grows less linguistically and culturally diverse, it is also becoming less biologically diverse. Mexico's biological and linguistic diversity show strong geographic overlap, with the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Guerrero, and Michoacán harboring most species and most languages. Similarly, Mexico's biodiversity hotspots mirror language hotspots, and areas with the highest number of endangered species overlap with areas where the endangerment of languages is also the highest.


Introducción: Lugares con diversidad de especies alta contienen diversidad lingüística alta, mientras que áreas con diversidad de especies baja tienden a contener diversidad lingüística baja. Objetivo: Caracterizar las relaciones entre la diversidad biológica y la diversidad cultural, una correlación que ha sido examinada a escala global pero que en este trabajo es comprobada por primera vez para México. Métodos: Recopilamos bases de datos extensas sobre las especies y las lenguas en peligro de extinción, y revisamos la literatura disponible sobre la diversidad biocultural de México, con énfasis en las especies y lenguas en peligro y en peligro crítico de extinción. Resultados: Con 364 lenguas vivas, México es el quinto país más diverso lingüísticamente hablando, pero 64 de estas lenguas están en muy alto riesgo de desaparecer y 13 ya desaparecieron. México también es el cuarto país más biodiverso, pero 1 213 especies de su flora y fauna están amenazadas de extinción y al menos 127 desaparecieron recientemente. Conclusiones: Los pueblos indígenas son custodios de mucha de la diversidad biocultural del mundo. A medida que el mundo se vuelve menos diverso lingüística y culturalmente, también se vuelve menos diverso biológicamente. La diversidad biológica y lingüística de México muestran una marcada superposición geográfica, y los estados de Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Guerrero y Michoacán son los que más especies y lenguajes albergan. De manera similar, los sitios en donde la biodiversidad está en mayor peligro también corresponden con los sitios en donde las lenguas lo están, y las áreas con el mayor número de especies en peligro traslapan con las áreas en donde las lenguas están en mayor peligro.

ABSTRACT

The demographic and microsatellite data on 25 markers along with non genetic information such as distribution, adaptation and utility pertaining to 24 Indian goat breeds were used to assess their conservation priorities. The effective population size (Ne) of Gohilwadi, Jharkhand Black and Sangamneri was greater than 200 and that of Black Bengal, Kutchi, Mehsana, Sirohi, Malabari and Zalawadi ranged from 100 to 200 but it was below 100 for rest (60%) of the breeds with Ganjam having the least value of 17.5 based on microsatellite data. All goat breeds whose effective population size is greater than 100 based on markers did have population size between 0.1 and 0.2 million except in few cases. The Ne based on microsatellite and demographic data revealed almost same order of ranking of goat populations. It was also revealed that Attappady and Kutchi were at highest risk of extinction probability (0.63) and more than half of the Indian goat breeds were having less than 50% extinction probability. Therefore, Attappady and Kutchi should be given top priority for conservation

ABSTRACT

La biodiversidad comprende la variabilidad de organismos y los sistemas ecológicos de los que forma parte, y constituye el sustento de la humanidad. Sin embargo, las actividades humanas han modificado a la biodiversidad en sus distintos niveles a un grado sin precedentes. Por lo cual, el objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar y describir el estado de la biodiversidad global y las cinco importantes causas de su declive: degradación y pérdida del hábitat, introducción de especies exóticas, sobreexplotación de recursos, contaminación y el cambio climático. La crisis actual se califica como la sexta extinción masiva, donde los anfibios y los corales formadores de arrecifes son los que presentan mayor riesgo de desaparecer. Debido a que para los próximos años el panorama no es el mejor, es urgente la toma acciones integrales para relentizar los procesos que dañan la integridad y funcionamiento de la diversidad biológica.


Biodiversity comprises the variability of organisms and the ecological systems of which it is part, and constitutes the livelihood of humanity. However, human activities have modified biodiversity at its various levels to an unprecedented level. Therefore, the aim of this work was to analyze and describe the state of global biodiversity and the five important causes of its decline: degradation and loss of habitat, introduction of exotic species, overexploitation of resources, pollution and climate change. The current crisis is classified as the sixth mass extinction, with amphibians and reef-building corals most at risk of disappearing. Because for the next few years the outlook is not the best, it is urgent to take concrete actions to slow down the processes that damage the integrity and functioning of biological diversity.

Resumen En la evitación discriminada, una respuesta emitida durante la señal impide la aparición de un estímulo aversivo. La extinción de las respuestas de evitación se ha estudiado como la terminación de la relación instrumental entre la respuesta y el estímulo aversivo. Su compresión ha sido primordial para comprender el mantenimiento de la respuesta de evitación en humanos. Se compararon tres procedimientos de extinción de la respuesta de evitación en humanos. Veintisiete participantes, aprendieron una tarea de evitación discriminada dividida en dos fases: Pavloviana, con apareamientos de dos señales (Estímulo Condicionados; EC 1 y EC2) con un sonido (90 dB, 60 Hz), e Instrumental, donde la respuesta R1 ante el EC1 o la respuesta R2 ante el EC2 evitaba el sonido. Posterior a estas fases, fueron asignados a tres grupos, cada grupo experimentó diferentes procedimientos de extinción; (Estímulo Incondicionado, EI) donde R1 no termino con la señal, pero si con el sonido, (EC) donde R1 termino con la señal, pero no con el sonido, y (EC/EI) donde R1 no termino con ninguno de los estímulos (señal, sonido). En todos los grupos R2 continuó evitando el sonido. Los resultados mostraron que las respuestas de evitación R1 disminuyeron en los grupos EC y EC/EI, y no se extinguieron en el grupo EI. Estos resultados enfatizan la importancia de la terminación de la señal en el mantenimiento del aprendizaje de evitación discriminada.


Abstract In discriminated avoidance, a response emitted during the signal prevents the appearance of an aversive stimulus. The extinction of avoidance responses has been studied as the termination of the instrumental relationship between the response and aversive stimulus. Its understanding has been essential to understand the maintenance of the avoidance response in humans. Three procedures of avoidance response extinction in humans were compared. Twenty-seven participants learned a discriminated avoidance task divided into two phases: Pavlovian, with pairings of two signals (Conditioned Stimulus (EC) 1, EC2) with a sound (90 dB, 60 Hz), and Instrumental, in which R1 response to the EC1 or R2 response to EC2 prevented sound. After these phases, participants were assigned to three groups, each group experienced different extinction procedures; (Unconditioned Stimulus, EI) where R1 did not end with the signal, but with the sound, (EC) where R1 ended with the signal, but not with the sound, and (EC / EI) where R1 did not end with any of the stimuli (signal, sound). In all groups R2 continued avoiding sound. Results show that R1 responses decreased (were extinguished) in the EC and EC / EI groups, but didn't in the EI group. These results emphasize the importance of signal termination in maintaining discriminated avoidance learning.

ABSTRACT Atelopus varius was believed to be extinct in Costa Rica until the rediscovery of a population within the Las Tablas Protected Zone (LTPZ) in 2008. This rediscovery represented a research and conservation opportunity, including contributing new information about the species' natural history. There are few reported species that prey on A. varius. This report presents a new predation record by a species of water bug (Abedus spp.) on an adult harlequin frog (A. varius). This is only the second confirmed predator for the species. These water bugs have been reported to prey on anurans during reproductive seasons, but in this case, the event occurred on A. varius out of their reproductive season. The effects of water bug predation on the only known reproductive population of this Critically Endangered species needs to be assessed to consider appropriate conservation measures to prevent further decline of the species.


RESUMEN Atelopus varius se consideró extinto en Costa Rica, hasta el redescubrimiento de una población en la Zona Protectora Las Tablas (ZPLT). Este hallazgo representa una oportunidad de investigación y conservación, incluyendo contribuir nueva información acerca de la historia natural de la especie. Hay pocas especies reportadas que depredan A. varius. Este reporte presenta un registro de depredación del chinche de agua (Abedus spp.), sobre un adulto de Sapo Arlequín (A. varius), como el segundo depredador confirmado de la especie. Usualmente, los chinches de agua depredan anuros durante su época reproductiva, pero este evento ocurrió fuera de la época reproductiva de A. varius. Los efectos de la depredación de chinches acuáticos sobre la única población reproductiva conocida de esta especie Críticamente Amenazada necesitan ser evaluados para considerar acciones de conservación.

ABSTRACT

Myrcianthes ferreyrae (McVaugh) McVaugh, el "arrayan" es un árbol endémico y amenazado de las lomas costeras del sur de Perú. El presente trabajo evaluó su estado de conservación entre marzo 2011 a agosto 2012. Se realizó el conteo de todos los individuos en casi todo su rango de distribución conocido (lomas de Atiquipa, Taymara y Chala viejo en la Provincia de Caraveli, Arequipa); se estableció un total de 9 parcelas de 0.25 ha, tres en cada localidad y en cada una se tomaron datos estructurales de todos los árboles con un diámetro un basal mayor a 10 cm; además, se evaluaron parámetros de mortalidad, regeneración natural y la presencia de disturbios. El arrayan tiene una población de 586 individuos, presenta una distribución diamétrica en forma de campana, la categoría de mortalidad más común es la tala de individuos; el porcentaje de regeneración natural es 33.12%, todos pertenecientes a las lomas de Atiquipa. Se concluye que poblacion de M. ferreyrae esta fuertemente amenazada, conformada por individuos adultos y con poca regeneración natural. En el manejo de esta especie debe considerarse su fragilidad y los problemas que tiene para su regeneración.


Myrcianthes ferreyrae (McVaugh) McVaugh, "arrayan" is an endemic and threatened tree of the "lomas" formations of south Peru. We evaluated their conservation status between March 2011 to August 2012; for which, all individuals were counted in its distributional range known (Atiquipa, Taymara and Chala Viejo hills in the Province of Caraveli, Arequipa). We established 9 plots of 0.25 hectares, three in each locality; in each plot we obtained data of all trees greater than 10 cm basal diameter, plus mortality parameters, its natural regeneration and presence of disturbances. Myrcianthes ferreyrae has a population of 586 individuals, its diameter distribution shows a bell form, the most common category mortality was logging; the natural regeneration was 33.12%, all belonging to the Atiquipa hills. We conclude that M. ferreyrae is strongly threatened, formed by adult individuals and with little natural regeneration. In management of M. ferreyrae should be considered its fragility and the problems it has for its regeneration.
